Editing Tools within HPC (CUIT HPC Training Series #2)

April 14, 2026
1:00 PM - 1:30 PM
America/New_York
Online

This session focuses on editing tools within HPC and is designed to help participants become comfortable working in a Linux-based research computing environment. It introduces the most common text editors used on HPC systems, Vim, Emacs, and Nano, and explains when and why each is used, with special emphasis on Vim.

Since Vim will be the primary editor used throughout the workshop series, building familiarity here will make everything that follows much easier. This interactive session will cover best practices in Vim, including navigation, editing, and working efficiently within files, giving participants the practical foundation needed to confidently manage and modify files on a cluster.

This session is part of the CUIT Research Services HPC Training Series, designed to onboard researchers to the shared high-performance computing (HPC) resources at Columbia. Led by HPC engineers, these webinars will introduce participants to Columbia’s shared on-premise HPC cluster (Insomnia) and provide foundational skills for effectively leveraging its resources. Whether you're new to HPC or looking to refine your expertise, this series will guide you through essential tools and workflows for running computational research efficiently.

You may take one or all of the courses, depending on your needs, though we recommend attending all sessions for the best experience.
